De verwende gangsterzoon Huang Lee doet na de DS en de PSP ook de iPhone en iPad aan in GTA: Chinatown Wars. Daarmee is een van zowel de beroemdste als beruchtste franchises eindelijk te spelen op Apples handheld.

Het verhaal van de cynische Huang Lee die de moord op zijn maffi avader wil wreken, het uitgebreide netwerk van straten in Liberty City, bijbaantjes als pizzakoerier of ambulancebestuurder en de mogelijkheid rijk te worden met drugshandel zijn gespaard. Daarbij keert Chinatown Wars voor de iPhone en iPad terug naar de roots van de titel op de DS. Behalve dat de game gebruik maakt van het touch screen, krijgen mini games als het hotwiren van gestolen auto's en het prepareren van Molotovcocktails hun oorspronkelijke vorm terug.

Voor hardcore spelers
Dit alles weliswaar op het kleinere scherm van de iPhone. De interface is hiervoor aangepast, zodat de besturing zich beter leent voor het touch screen. Lopen gaat vertrouwd met een virtuele stick, autorijden geschiedt via knoppen om te accelereren, te remmen en naar links of rechts te sturen, al dan niet geholpen door de steering assist. Het kost net als in de andere versies de nodige tijd om door te krijgen hoe je zonder kleerscheuren of ongelukken door Liberty City moet scheuren. Shoot-outs met rivaliserende bendes zijn eveneens vrij lastig zonder in het wilde weg kogels af te vuren op voorbijgangers. De gameplay blijft al met al ook in deze versie vooral gericht op de meer hardcore speler.

Grafisch is Chinatown Wars minder mooi dan andere iPhone-games, maar wel identiek aan de versies voor de DS en de PSP met het licht nostalgische top down-perspectief. Hoewel de iPhone de graphics van Chinatown Wars prima aankan, maakt het kleinere scherm de game wel minder overzichtelijk. Dit betekent dat je met je neus dichter op het scherm hangt en als de camera uitzoomt, lijkt Liberty City meer op een mierenkolonie.

Kortom
GTA: Chinatown Wars is een van de meest gedownloade games in de App Store. In vergelijking met die andere versies heeft Chinatown Wars op de iPhone en iPad enkele imperfecties, vooral wegens het kleine scherm en de besturing. Chinatown Wars is echter een van de meest uitgebreide en beste games die tot dusver is verschenen.

Spelletjes op m'n iphone blijven moeilijk, wel leuk voor in de trein. En voor 8 eur geen miskoop.
